The book "Early Steamboat Navigation of the Missouri River", by Hiram Martin Chittenden (author of American Fur Trade of the Far West and History of the Yellowstone National Park), published in New York by Francis P Harper in 1903. Is mostly about Capt Joseph LaBarge

Chittenden got the ancestry of J.Marie L. from letters from Dr. Philemon Laberge, Sheriff of Beauharnois, Quebec. Maternal lineage is from Scharff's "History of St Louis"

Capt La Barge is also mentioned at lentgh in the Time Life Book Series "The Old West" in the volume entitled "The Rivermen"

Vols 1 & 2 were reprinted in as one volume in 1962 by Ross and Haines, Inc, Mineapolis MN
