John Keith to Australia
John Keith Morrison to Australia in 1854
"It is as if all of Bloomfield (Maine) is here!"
Many letters have been researched that described the trip of gold seekers coming from New England to Australia between 1853 and 1860. One letter commented about his "cabin mate" being "Morrison from Bloomfield". Since there were no other Morrisons that left Bloomfield, Maine for Australia, this must be our John Keith. This referred to the ship "Rockland" which sailed from New York in April, 1853, bound for Melbourne around the African horn and through the Indian Ocean. The only record of the trip is from the NY Times shipping notices which were notorious for mispellings and incomplete lists. The list does not mention John Keith, but it is probable that he was on this ship.
